Why Antenatal Care Matters
Regular antenatal (prenatal) checkups are one of the most important things you can do for a healthy pregnancy. They help monitor your health and your baby's development, detect complications early, and prepare you for labour and delivery.
First Trimester (Weeks 1–12)
Your first visit should be as early as possible — ideally before 10 weeks. This includes confirmation of pregnancy, estimation of due date, blood group and Rh typing, full blood count, urine analysis, screening for infections, and first-trimester ultrasound (dating scan).
Second Trimester (Weeks 13–27)
This is often the most comfortable trimester. Key milestones include the anatomy scan ultrasound (18–20 weeks) to check fetal growth and organ development, glucose screening for gestational diabetes, and monitoring blood pressure closely.
Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40)
Visits become more frequent (every 2 weeks from week 28, then weekly from week 36). Your doctor will monitor fetal position, growth, amniotic fluid levels, blood pressure, and prepare a birth plan.
Warning Signs to Never Ignore
- Severe headache or visual changes
- Swelling of face, hands, or feet
- Decreased fetal movement
- Vaginal bleeding or discharge
- Abdominal pain or contractions before 37 weeks
